Garic strode the wooded path that led to the clearing and their coach. A few feet from the break, he darted into a cluster of trees where he knew Vodamir kept watch. A full yellow moon glowed in the inky sky just above the hills and outlined Vodamirâs shape. Garic gave a light whistle as he approached. âCousin, are you awake?â he asked in a low voice, crouching beside Vodamir who rested against a tree trunk.
âMore than awake, annoyed,â Vodamir replied.
âIâm here on time.â
âDamn mosquitoes! They love tormenting me.â Vodamir slapped his neck and sat up.
âYour heat draws them,â Garic chided.
âI prefer the ladies.â
âOn your return, Iâm sure your woman healer can find a salve to soothe your itch.â
Vodamir gave a snort. âItâs been dead quiet. Shall I return at daybreak?â
âNo need. Weather looks good for the mid-morning hunt. Iâm bringing bow as well as spear.â
âMy axe itches for a plump rabbit.â Vodamir swung his arm in an arc.
âThatâs your best throw?â Garic goaded, punching at Vodamir.
Vodamir smirked, âYouâll never be as good as I am,â and bolted to his feet.
Garic followed. âThe women are excited to join us. Perhaps they should ride as well. It appears those dogs can run.â
âJa, if the women tire or grow bored they can return easily.â
âThe supplies? Formiae had everything we need?â
Vodamir slapped Garic warmly on the shoulder and started toward the path. âItâs done. They have plenty in that town.â
âGood,â Garic replied, taking his post. Vodamir threaded his way toward the villa. Garic settled himself and within seconds, he swatted the side of his neck. Daylight come soon, he thought and steeled his gaze on the coach nestled in the shadowy grey.
